Este descubrimiento fue particularmente interesante debido al sistema reproductivo \u00fanico de esta fascinante especie de crust\u00e1ceo.<\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cPara que la especie sobreviva en su ambiente t\u00edpicamente hostil, la Artemia ha desarrollado la capacidad de producir 'huevos de invierno'. Estos 'huevos' son, de hecho, quistes que contienen embriones que entran en un per\u00edodo de latencia; este es un evento biol\u00f3gico intrigante en el que un organismo permanece en un sue\u00f1o profundo y deja de metabolizar, solo para despertarse cuando las condiciones son favorables. Esto significa que estos embriones encapsulados e inactivos pueden almacenarse durante mucho tiempo y simplemente deben incubarse en las condiciones adecuadas para producir n\u00e1uplios, que son muy bien aceptados como fuente de alimento para las larvas de peces y camarones. Este \u00faltimo sigue siendo una fuente de quistes de calidad gestionados de forma sostenible hasta el d\u00eda de hoy.<\/p><p>Sin embargo, muy pronto, la creciente demanda super\u00f3 la cosecha anual de aproximadamente 30 a 50 toneladas. Desde finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1960 en adelante, hubo una escasez de quistes muy grave,  la calidad de eclosi\u00f3n de los quistes disponibles se volvi\u00f3 cada vez menos confiable.
